GI Robocam Under Development

Researchers in the NanoRobotics Lab at Carnegie Mellon University have created a tiny robot camera that can be anchored inside the human intestine without damaging the intestinal wall. The camera would be useful for taking pictures, performing biopsies, and providing treatment such as cauterization. The robot’s legs were covered with sticky substance that mimics secretions produced by beetles’ feet. This substance enables the robot to adhere to soft tissue as necessary. The next stage of development is to develop a camera whose movements can be controlled. Technology Review, July 31, 2008
