Study Focuses on Children with Functional Bowel Disorder

By tracking pain episodes and bowel habits, a recent study conducted by researchers at Baylor College of Medicine determined that children with functional abdominal pain and irritable bowel syndrom have low-grade intestinal inflammation and increased gastrointestinal (GI) permeability. The greater the inflammation, the more the children’s pain interfered with daily activities. The barrier integrity of the intestinal tracts of children with these disorders is reduced, resulting in greater intestinal permeability. Unlike inflammation, The permeability of the intestine was not related to the degree of the abdominal pain. PubMed, November 2008
