H. pylori Thwarted by Yogurt Vaccine

Researchers in Kyoto, Japan, have found that urease antibodies consumed in yogurt may help reduce gastritis and stomach ulcers caused by H. pylori. This pathogen uses urease to infect the stomach and is a major cause of peptic ulcers, stomach cancer, and other GI problems. Researchers extracted urease antibodies from chicken eggs, then added it to yogurt containing active cultures. The patients who had H. pylori and ate the yogurt with the antibody showed reduced levels of urease, indicating less bacterial activity. The yogurt is already on sale in Asian markets, and the research team hopes to target U.S. markets. MedPage Today, March 23, 2009
