Prebiotics intended to feed healthy gut bacteria are more popular these days as an ingredient in common food products, such as yogurt, cottage cheese, and bread. Common prebiotics are inulin and fructo–oligosaccharides (FOS). The prebiotics have been proven to increase numbers of healthy bacteria, including bifidobacteria. In addition, a study funded by the National Institutes of Health showed that consuming high levels of prebiotics increased bone-mineral density.
