Eat Your Veggies to Reduce Cancer Risk

A study of 60,000 people published in the British Journal of Cancer showed that vegetarians are less likely to develop certain kinds of cancer. According to the study, 33 in 100 people develop cancer in the general population, but only 29 in 100 vegetarians develop cancer. Cancers of the blood and lymph are more likely among meat eaters, as is stomach cancer, attributed to N-nitroso compounds and high cooking temperatures required for meats. However, bowel and cervical cancers were higher in vegetarians. Scientists caution that the links between diet and cancer are complex and that a balanced diet is best. BBC, June 30, 2009
