IBS Patients Are at Higher Risk for Unrelated Common Disorders.

IBS patients appear to show a general amplification of disease incidence. The disorders that are the most common in the general population are similarly common in IBS patients with higher relative incidence. These disorders do not share their origin with IBS and include diseases such as upper respiratory tract infection, ear infection, stroke and many other common disorders. The reason for higher incidence for these disorders in IBS is not known. The authors concluded this may be due to more symptoms reporting and consultation rather than shared etiology of the disorders. American Journal of Gastroenterology
