Abdominal Hypersensitivity and Pain Response in Women with IBS

A new study by the University of California, Los Angeles, shows that the brains of women with IBS function differently than those of women without IBS. When subjected to anticipated and actual abdominal pain, the women with IBS were unable to reduce activity in areas of the brain that controlled emotional and pain responses. The women with IBS showed stronger responses in multiple regions of the brain. These findings may enable scientists to better understand and treat IBS. U.S. News and World Report, Jan. 9, 2008
